Ditaemane Ring
Diamonds are a wonder of nature and show us that we are all interconnected with one another and the Universe. Throughout history diamonds have been revered, oftentimes referred to as ‘Tears of the Gods’ and it’s easy to understand why.
A Wonder of Nature
Diamonds are know to be as old as the Universe formed over 3 billion years ago. Its hard to grasp that number in the concept of deep time, but to try to put it in context I have been reading Timefulness by Marcia Bjornerud (who brilliantly reveals how the rhythms of Earths deep past can give us perspective for living today).
The earliest known records of diamonds dates back to India more than 3,000 years ago where the sacred stones were used in their natural uncut state . Diamonds were also worn in ancient Egypt adorning the Pharaohs and through the centuries each generation and culture has developed their own deep connection with diamonds.
Mystical Powers
Diamonds much like crystals have held mystical powers and forces. The ancient Greeks regarded diamonds as the tears of God and the word for diamonds, ‘adamas’ meant invincible. The hardest stone they are excellent conductors of energy and are even referenced in diamond mind meditation.
Ditaemane
The Setswana word for diamonds is ditaemane. The first diamonds were discovered in Botswana in 1967 one year after the country gained Independence. At the time there were only 12km of paved roads in the country, few hospitals and most people depended on cattle and subsistence farming for an income. Five decades on and Botswana has transformed into one of the fastest growing economies in the African continent.
Empowering a Nation
For many people, Botswana is the biggest diamond producing country in the world that they’ve never even heard of. Hundreds of thousands of lives in Botswana have been touched by the proceeds from diamonds; and revenue has been used for the betterment of the nation, it’s a powerful story and legacy of how diamonds do good.
